Old, old, really old work.
This is a selection of Doctor Who work from 2009 produced whilst working for Edward Thomas (production Designer) and with Dan Walker (Concept Artist) on the redesign of the Tardis for Matt Smith's first year...

At one point it was looking like the Ext. police box dimension maybe based on the real metropolitan police box...

Alternative console design...

  1. Were these interiors done before you started to add SketchUp in to the design process? Do you use 3D modelling more these days? I find it useful for laying out basic forms and painting over

  2. these were completely 2D, pencil or wacom sketches and then rendered in photoshop. I wasn't really using 3D software back then. I actually miss working like that now!
I end up using 3D more and more, some of my clients like me using 3D because when they are happy with the design and I have it modelled, I can knock out different views, look at it through different camera lens (to see how much they have to physically build) and the client has the 3D asset. (I always start with a pen in my sketch book!)

  3. I remember these designs from back in 2010 - so much grander, more mysterious and timeless than what we got on screen. What was the origin of these concepts? Were they entirely yours or were you given some key phrases to design around?

  5. RichT, This set was built on the structure of the old Torchwood hub, which I think had be destroyed in a season final ep (?), so working to Ed's brief, myself and Dan were doing concept based around the general layout of the hub. the central time rotor was in almost the same position as the silver monolith that stood in the middle of the torchwood hub!
